Can Single Wire Clearance Light Be installed To Replace 2-Wire Light On Travel Trailer

Question:

I have a Layton travel trailer and would like to replace the incandescent lights on it. I have 2 wires which is power and ground. My question is can you use a led light with only one wire or does it need to be two?

If a trailer clearance light like part # MCL44AB1 is used, the one wire is the power wire for the light and the light will be grounded through the mounting hardware.

If you want to use the ground wire that you have on your trailer you can install part # MCL44AB. This has a 2-wire install, where one is for the power and the second wire is for the ground.

In order for the mounting hardware to be used as the ground, do I have to run the existing ground wire to the mounting hardware?

@Isaac If you're not mounting the Optronics LED Trailer Clearance and Side Marker Light # MCL44AB1 into metal then you would want to cut the ring terminal off of the ground wire and push it through the back of the mounting base and then use a butt connector # DW05744-5 to splice the wire to your existing ground wire. I've attached a link to a video below where Randy will show you exactly how to do this.
