Because most trailers run on a 2-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on 1 wire - the signals from your vehicle may have to be converted to be compatible with your trailer's wiring. If your vehicle operates on a 3-wire system, which means that it has separate brake and turn signals, then those signals will need to be combined so that they run on 1 wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. This converter will also ensure that your trailer's lights illuminate fully, even if your vehicle has pulse-width modulation (PWM) wiring. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.
When used with the Curt powered converter wiring kit (C55152 - sold separately), this converter offers circuit protection and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.
Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.
Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Requires wiring kit (C55152 - sold separately) to connect to battery.This affordable converter kit should be the only one on the market! It is the fifth (5th) kit I have installed, and is the best because of the "powered" feature allowing the user to connect 12-volt power. All of my vehicles have separate turn signals from the brake lamps, so I've had plenty of practice using these converter kits! Now I know which kit to purchase from now, on.
The wiring harness was easy to install except until the end. The splice kits were to large and didn't make contact with the wiring on the car. I couldn't figure out what the problem was for weeks. I called etrailer and was sent a wiring schematic but they were just as clueless. I ended up cutting the ends off the kit and putting normal connections on.After a year it still works fine and will gladly install this again on my next car.
I am so happy with this Curt POWERED converter design, that I bought another one to convert my other trailer puller to this style of converter. It has solved all of my trailer lamp brightness issues with the turn signals and brake lamps. You will not believe the difference, especially if the trailer lamps seem dim, and the wiring and ground conditions have been inspected already. May require Curt kit # C55152 to bring 12V power connection back to this kit.
I bought the converter wiring kit along with the taillight converter to install on my 2006 Mini Cooper. The kits included everything I needed to do the installation, except for a 6/ 12V tester, which I was able to get locally at a hardware store. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, so the full installation time was about 30 minutes. In fact, I did the installation on my lunch break in my employee parking lot. A quality kit for a great price, would recommend.
Working with tech support at e trailor , they recommended this product and it was exactly what i needed, the instruction were easy to follow, even installing on a retired ambulance with wierd wiring I was able to get this to work.
