U-Bolts and U-Bolt Plate Recommendation for Installing Leaf Springs on a 1-1/2 in Square Axle

Updated 10/27/2014 | Published 10/26/2014

Question:

My 1979 boat trailer has a 1.5-inch square axle which has a 3.5” x 3.5” x 0.25” welded plate attaching it to a three-leaf slipper spring above. It is actually a 3-sided open channel axle with welded spindles at each end. The upper-side of the axle measures 1-1/2 inches and the lower, open end, measures a slightly wider 1-5/8 inches. Four 3/8-in bolts through the axle plate were bolted to what looked like two shackle links straddling the spring. I can’t find a replacement axle with the same overall length dimensions, therefore I need to reassemble the axle to new springs but need the proper hardware. The hole spacing on the plate is 2-7/16 inch for the holes parallel to the axle and perpendicular to the spring. The spacing between holes in the direction perpendicular to the axle is 2-1/2 inches. Any suggestions?

If what you really need is a new axle you can go to a local trailer shop to you and have them custom order you the exact specs you need for a trailer axle.

But to attach springs to your 1-1/2 inch square axle you would want the mount plate part # 115983 and then for U-bolts part # Sp01-120. I attached review videos for both products.
