Hand Winch With Top Crank Handle for Loading 5 x 8 Utility Trailer
Published 08/30/2014 >
Question:
Thinking of ordering this, do you see any conflict or have a suggestion? Have an open side 5 x 8 utility trailer about 15 years old .. Remodeling the trailer with LEDs, wire in conducts, floor, chains, etc .. Trailer is heavy duty with front angle beams going in V shaped pattern to trailer/truck connection, and heavy steel bar/plate ramp sections .. Was custom made by farm person years ago, and I made sides for stake pockets .. Metal is in excellent condition May be nice to have this item for pull effort, as I had to sometimes have help pulling things up ramp .. Looking at possibly placing a plate on the front floor that this will attach to, and winch could be removed when not used .. Trailer used for mulch, building supplies, firewood, etc .. Kept in rear yard or garage Placing iwinch on floor rules out using a side handle, and worm gear will help with unloading .. Can use a small pulley wheel on rear of floor as a cable guide over the floor edge This has a top handle, would turn freely in circles Do you see any issues .. Any suggestions .. What do you suggest for cable, probably just 25

The only problem I can see with your choice is that worm gear winches take a lot of cranking before anything happens. The crank revolution to drum revolution ratio is 30:1, meaning you'd need to crank the handle 30 times to make the cable drum rotate once. You can lessen the pain by removing the handle and using a heavy duty 1/2 inch drill with a 5/8 inch socket to turn the winch at a less sedate pace.
Due to the fact that you're wanting a top crank winch, your choices are pretty limited. Your only other alternative I can see would be a ratcheting handle winch, part # DL16001. This item has a low 400 lb capacity, and isn't reversible. However, it doesn't need 360 degrees for the handle to rotate.
