Best Fifth Wheel Hitch for a 2027 Chevy Silverado 3500 With Factory Prep

Updated 10/29/2026 | Published 10/27/2026

Question:

I just bought a 2027 Chevy Silverado 3500 with the 8-foot bed and factory fifth wheel prep package. Our current fifth wheel weighs around 16,000 lbs loaded, but we're thinking about upgrading to a larger one in the next couple of years. Which B&W Companion would you recommend? Will both fit directly into the factory puck system?

Hey Matthew, congratulations on the new truck! Both B&W Companion fifth wheel hitches fit directly into the factory puck system on your 2027 Silverado 3500, so you won't need any additional mounting rails or adapters. You can choose from the following:

-B&W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch - 20,000 lbs # BWRVK3710

-B&W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch - 25,000 lbs # BWRVK3715

The 20K Companion has plenty of capacity for your current 16k fifth wheel. However, since you're thinking about upgrading to a larger trailer, I'd recommend the 25k # BWRVK3715. That gives you additional hitch capacity without needing to replace it if you move to a heavier fifth wheel, as long as you stay within your truck's towing and payload limits.

Both have fully articulating heads and cam-action handles that make hookup and release easier. The head can also be removed so you can separate it from the base when taking the hitch out of your truck.

What fifth wheel do you have now, and what are you thinking about upgrading to?

One other thing, I'd like to add a tonneau cover so I can keep the Companion covered when we're not towing. Is there a retractable cover you'd recommend that won't get in the way of the fifth wheel?

@Matt I recommend the RetraxPRO MX # RT80485 for your Silverado's 8' bed. It's a retractable hard cover, so you can open it up when towing and close it over the Companion when you're not using it. If you think you might want to add a ladder rack or crossbars later, I'd go with the RetraxPRO XR # RTT-80485 instead. It has built-in T-slot rails for mounting a compatible rack while keeping the retractable cover.

@Matt hi, I have 2026 GMC 3500 Denali dually and bought the BW 25k model for our 2027 Brinkley 3515 5th wheel. It's more than enough for the GvWR or pin weight of camper. I installed the BW at the middle bolt holes for height because I installed the Retrax pro cover which adds around 1in more to bed rail height. I guessed correctly because we picked up camper last Friday and my camper-to-cover rail clearance is 6in, exactly what it should be for turns. The camper does seem to sit a little high at the nose like other poster said, but it towed very nicely anyway. The BW and Retrax pro are both excellent choices.

@Rob sounds like you got the hitch height dialed in perfectly with the Retrax cover. That 6" of clearance is right where you want to be. Glad to hear the Companion and RetraxPRO are working well together on your GMC!

Congratulations Matthew. I recently bought the BMW for my 2025 GMC Sierra 3500. It works very well. The only thing I caution you about is that the 2025 GMC Sierra seem to be a little bit higher than my last 2020 GMC Sierra. The B&W companion, with it set on its lowest setting was still a bit higher than my old fifth wheel hitch. Thus my art fifth wheel road a little higher on the front. To solve the solution, I had to go to Morryde they installed a 3-in lift on the rear of my fifth wheel. So be sure to make your measurements before you make the plunge. I don't understand why the GMC had to be higher but it was. It's a great hitch

@Butch I appreciate you sharing your experience! The newer GM trucks definitely sit higher, and that can make getting a fifth wheel level a challenge. Glad MORryde was able to get everything leveled out for you.
