2" Receiver Hitch Upgrade to Reduce Bouncing and Jerking When Towing a Travel Trailer ?

Published 10/20/2026

Question:

I've got a 2021 Ford F-150 2" receiver pulling a 28 foot travel trailer, around 7,500 lbs loaded. The truck does fine but some of these interstate roads are terrible and banging up my stuff. Is there anything I can add to the hitch to help smooth things out?

Hey Randy!

One option I'd recommend is the Air Safe Shock Absorbing Ball Mount # AS23FR. It uses a built-in air bag to cushion the connection between your truck and trailer, helping reduce those harsh jolts that you feel going over bumps.

It's rated for 14,000 lbs of towing and 1,050 lbs of tongue weight, so you'll want to verify your loaded tongue weight before ordering.

If you're already using a weight distribution hitch, you can still use the Air Safe # AS23FR with the Weight Distribution Bracket # AS88FR. This bracket works with most traditional weight distribution systems that use a 2" wide mounting channel, including many Curt and Equal-i-zer setups. Just keep in mind that using it reduces the Air Safe's weight ratings by 25%.

Are you currently using a weight distribution hitch with your camper?
