Can a Victron DC-DC Charger Charge Lithium RV Batteries From Both a 7-Way and RV Converter?

Updated 10/19/2026 | Published 10/17/2026

Question:

Question on Victron dc-dc charger. Can this be used to limit tge current draw and protect the trailer existing wiring when upgrading to lithium battery? I do not have the ability to upgrade the converter and wiring to battery. Also can the 7 pin connector wire from tow vehicle AND the wire from existing converter be connected to the Victron to protect both from lithium battery current draw?

Hey there Michael!

Yes, certain Victron DC-DC chargers like the Orion XS # VN93VR allow you to limit the charging current, which could help protect your existing wiring when upgrading to lithium batteries. It has a lithium charging mode which is nice.

For connecting both the 7-way and converter, one possibility would be a DC-rated selector switch like the Seaflo # SE56VR, allowing you to select one charging source at a time. However, we'd need to verify your wiring and charging equipment before recommending that setup.

Another option, and potentially the simpler one, would be using the Victron strictly for charging from your tow vehicle and keeping your RV converter separate, provided it's compatible with your lithium batteries.

Which Victron model are you considering, and what converter is currently installed in your trailer? That would help me determine the best approach without replacing equipment unnecessarily.
