How to Connect an Auxiliary 40 lb Propane Tank to a Travel Trailer

Updated 09/30/2026 | Published 09/29/2026

Question:

I have a small travel trailer that currently has a dual propane tank system with 20lb tanks. I would like to add a third 40lb tank to use while on extended stays. Is the 103613-MBS the appropriate Tee to use with a Worthington 40lb tank with a type 1 valve and if so, what hose would I need to connect the tank to the Tee?

Hey James, thanks for reaching out. You are on the right track here. The MB Sturgis Sturgi-Stay # 103613-MBS is made for exactly this type of setup. It installs between one of your existing 20 lb cylinders and the regulator pigtail, then gives you a quick-disconnect inlet for an auxiliary cylinder. Your Worthington 40 lb cylinder with a Type 1 valve is fine for this application.

To connect the 40 lb auxiliary tank, I recommend the MB Sturgis # 100476-72-MBS hose which is 6' long. This lets you leave your normal dual-tank system intact and hook up the larger 40 lb tank when you settle in for an extended stay.

How far away from the trailer are you planning to set the 40 lb tank?

Jesse, I was going to secure the tank next to the tongue near the other two tanks for ease of access and monitoring.

@JamesC Ok perfect! That 6' long hose should be plenty long then.
