Ways To Get Rid Of Porpoising While Towing

Updated 09/22/2026 | Published 09/19/2026

Question:

I have a 2025 chevy Colorado LT 4 wheel drive. I tow a 5200 lb travel trailer loaded and am looking for a little help with porpoising on only certain stretches of road. Most roads are fine and the trailer and truck handles well. I have heard and read reports that the Timbren SES have solved the issue for other users. I just ordered a set but am now concerned that the ride when empty will be compromised. Was this order correct or should I consider canceling the order and purchase the Sumo Solos?

Hi Harold!

I see you ordered the used set of replacement Blue Ox spring bars already, but I do want to ask a question, do you already have a Blue Ox SwayPro weight distribution system? These will only fit that specific system.

And also, do you know your loaded tongue weight? Typically with a 5,200 pound trailer, your tongue weight will be 520 pounds, making these bars a little too heavy duty for your camper (they have a tongue weight range of 550 lbs to 750 lbs). The # BXW4005 spring bars with their 350 lbs to 550 lbs tongue weight range would likely be a better option. If your tongue weight is on the heavier side though, the ones you got will be fine.

Now to answer your overall question. Timbren and SumoSprings will help with porpoising, but a weight distribution system will help more. It's the way I tend to tell people to go. Especially since it won't affect your unloaded ride like suspension enhancement will.

Tongue weight is 697#. When loaded. After talking to other experts on your team, I decided to purchase lighter spring bars as mine on my blue ox sway pro wdh are rated for 1000#. We decided to purchase proper spring bars before enhancing the suspension. Harold

@HaroldW Gotcha. Glad to hear you already have a SwayPro system. Made me a little nervous when I saw you just purchased bars! ^___^ And the ones you got will work perfectly with that tongue weight, so you are good to go! And I think this will get you where you want to be with that porpoising as well. A well balanced weight distribution system almost always gets rid of that.
