Does a Kat’s Ether Start System Have to Be Mounted Vertically?
Updated 09/08/2026 | Published 09/03/2026 >
Question:
do you have to mount the assembly vertical or can it be mounted horizontal? what size and brand or type of ether or starting fluid will fit and work with the unit and where can they be purchased? or does a standard starting fluid can work by removing the spray cap?

Hey Chad, thanks for reaching out. For the Kat’s Heaters Ether Start System # KH33112, the ether cylinder assembly needs to be mounted vertically, so I would not mount it horizontally. The system relies on the cylinder and metering valve being positioned correctly to deliver the proper amount of ether into the engine.
You also cannot use a regular aerosol can of starting fluid with the spray cap removed. The # KH33112 is designed for a threaded 18 oz ether fast-flash starting fluid cylinder made specifically for ether injection systems. These are typically available through diesel truck, heavy equipment, agricultural, and tractor-parts suppliers. Just look for an 18 oz threaded ether cylinder for an engine ether injection system and verify the threaded connection matches the Kat’s valve.
