Recommended Self Centering Keel Roller for a Boat Trailer w/ Roller Bunks

Updated 09/06/2026 | Published 09/02/2026

Question:

Hey there. Looking at coverting my carpeted bunk Road Runner trailer to bunk rollers DL21741 to make shallow angle boat ramps easier on my Lund 1650 aluminum boat. Do I need rollers at the rear of the trailer to center the boat and help lift/Lead the boat on the the Bunk rollers ? appreciate the advice.

Thanks for the pictures Will! You do not need additional rollers mounted at the rear of your boat trailer but a self centering Keel Roller like item # CES94JR would really help center your Lund boat on the Dutton-Lainson Boat Trailer Deluxe Roller Bunk item # DL21741.

The CE Smith Keel Roller item # CES94JR would use the Roller Shaft item # CE10727A, and bracket item # CE10500G to attach to the rear most crossmember in your pictures. This would line your boat's hull up with the Roller Bunk item # DL21741 and not create a high spot that could potentially damage your boat when you hit bumps. That's the main concern with your idea of using a roller to lift the boat up onto the bunks.

Where do you usually launch your boat that's so shallow? Feel free to answer this and throw in any other questions you have, where it says Add Comment.

Jerred Thanks for the reply. The carpet bunks are currently 8 ' long. Would a 5 ft roller be enough or should I get 2 four foots ? Thanks Will .

@WillG You're welcome. Since your bunks are 8' long, you'll want to use two of the 4' Long Tie Down Roller Bunks for Boat Trailers item # TD64FR on each carpeted bunk.
