Hi Nicole, for your 2005 Ford F-150 XL, you need the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # C14357, as long as your truck does not already have a factory installed hitch, since this hitch will not fit vehicles with the factory hitch. It has a 2 inch receiver and is rated for up to 10,000 pounds of gross trailer weight and 1,000 pounds of tongue weight. Those ratings increase to 12,000 pounds and 1,200 pounds when used with a properly rated weight distribution system, although you will always need to stay within the towing limits of your specific F-150.
If your flatbed trailer is heavier or you notice the trailer affecting how the truck handles, a weight distribution system may be worth considering to help improve the towing experience. Almost all flat bed trailers have trailer brakes, so if you need a brake controller I would go with the Curt Spectrum Brake Controller with Custom Harness, part # C72SV. I really like the Spectrum because it keeps the cab looking clean and uncluttered. The main unit installs out of sight behind the dash, and only the small control knob is visible, so you are not giving up knee room or adding a bulky controller under the steering wheel. The included custom harness also makes installation much easier by plugging into your truck's factory brake controller port without splicing wires.
Does your Ford already have the 7-Way plug at the back?
