How to Use a Yakima Vertical Bike Rack w/a 2-1/2" Hitch Receiver

Updated 08/24/2026 | Published 08/17/2026

Question:

I have a follow up question to the 2 1/2 inch sleeve. What is the diameter of the pin for the bike rack? I have a sleeve for a trailer hitch that includes a pin that fits all the way through. I may also need to consider how far in the hitch the hole for the pin is? Looking forward to your answer.

Hey Don. The Yakima HangTight Vertical Bike Rack item # Y59GR uses a 5/8" diameter threaded bolt to attach to a 2" hitch. This bike rack has threads in the shank so you can't use a standard hitch pin.

To mount the HangTight Vertical Bike Rack item # Y59GR in a 2-1/2" receiver you have to use the Yakima Hitch Receiver Reducer Sleeve item # Y74MX. This sleeve is designed specifically for Yakima bike racks and is approved for the Vertical ones as well. It includes a longer threaded hitch bolt that will connect the HangTight item # Y59GR and the Reducer Sleeve item # Y74MX to your vehicle's 2-1/2" hitch receiver.

The Yakima Hitch Receiver Reducer Sleeve item # Y74MX is a pretty new part, which is why you didn't see it in the question you referenced.

What kind of bikes do you have and what vehicle are you going to be using that has a 2-1/2" hitch? Feel free to answer this and throw in any other questions you have, where it says Add Comment.
