Can A 2019 Ford Ecosport Carry A 500 lb Haul Master Carrier And A Mobility Scooter?

Question:

I own a 2019 Ford Ecosport and have a Haul-Master 500 Lbs. Mobility Wheelchair and Scooter Carrier that I need to haul my Axis Trackchair with. I see that I can only use a class II rated trailer hitch but that has a 300+- lb tongue weight. What can I use?

Hey David, thanks for reaching out. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but unfortunately, a 2019 Ford EcoSport just isn't built to carry that kind of load on a hitch-mounted carrier. The only hitch available is the Curt # C12188, and while it has a 350 lb tongue weight rating, that isn't enough for a 500 lb carrier, let alone the combined weight of the carrier and your Axis Trackchair.

There isn't a higher-capacity hitch available for the EcoSport, so there isn't a safe hitch-mounted solution for this application. The best option is a different vehicle equipped with a Class III or higher hitch that has enough tongue weight capacity to support both the carrier and the Trackchair. That's or pick up a small trailer you can use to haul the Trackchair.

We have a 2018 Ecosport with this hitch. I put an adaptor that goes in the 1 1/4 hole and comes out with a 2" hole that I then put in a 2" piece with a 2" ball. Last week I towed my 500 lb. trailer 75 miles, bought a 550 lb. motorcycle and towed that back 75 miles. It's probably not ok to do that but it works.

@Joseph Yea using those hitch adapters is never my first choice but from a weight capacity standpoint, you're probably ok. Even with the motorcycle you probably aren't hauling more than 100-150 lbs of tongue weight. Our rule of thumb is a hitch adapter reduces your hitches carrying capacity by half but you aren't hauling a ton of weight here so it should be ok.
