Which Tailgate Pad Bike Rack To Go With On A 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 Carrying 2 E-Bikes

Updated 07/29/2026 | Published 07/24/2026

Question:

I need to find a secure solution to put 2 heavy ebikes Velotric Nomad 2 and a Nomad 2X - 70 and 80 in a pickup truck bed that is 14 shorter than ebikes 2018 Chevy 1500 4x4 Crew Cab W/T with 59 bed. Does the Thule GateMate work for this requirement? Is the Yakima GateKeeper better? Please advise.

Hi Quinn!

I actually have a 2016 Silverado 1500 with the short bed and was looking at both of these a while back. I didn't end up getting a bike, so I didn't get one of these, but I was leaning towards the Yakima GateKeeper # Y58AR over the Thule GateMate Pro # TH823PRO. Here's why:

These are basically the exact same size (though the Thule can technically carry 2 more bikes than the Yakima), but the part that opens up for the tailgate handle is much larger on the Yakima. That was a big thing for me as that is where the backup camera is on our generation Silverado. The Thule just didn't look like there was enough space to still have the backup camera work properly. So yes, the Yakima is a little more expensive, but I think it's the better option for your truck.

Where do you typically take you bikes out? I grew up riding in the mountains and parks of Southern California and was feeling nostalgic when I was looking at bikes and racks. Still thinking about it, but there aren't a lot of mountains here in Missouri.
