Charging Components for RV With 2 300Ah Lithium Chassis Batteries

Question:

HI, Ive upgraded my RV Battery System and looking to find the correct charging components for the alternator. Current components: 120 Amp alternator Lead acid starter Battery 2 300 AH Lithium Chassis batteries Im concerned of damaging the alternator from overheating, etc, due to the high recharge amperage capability of LIPO Battery. Especially at low RPMs Which components are best suited for my application? Isolator? Dc to Dc charger? Thanks

Hey Gerritt! You're thinking along the right lines. With a 120A alternator and a 600Ah lithium house battery bank, I recommend using a DC-to-DC charger like the Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A DC-DC Charger # VN93VR.

The charger limits the amount of current the lithium batteries can draw from the alternator, while also providing the proper charging profile. That's a much better solution than a standard battery isolator, which simply connects the batteries together and doesn't limit charging current.
