Comparing Quality of Thule Epos and Saris CycleOn

Updated 07/21/2026 | Published 07/19/2026

Question:

I wonder if you have any comments about overall quality of this rack vs Thule Epos. it looks like either might work for my vehicle and bikes. not wild about the Epos not folding up against rear of vehicle, nor that ramp is an extra purchase, but it seems like some people consider it top quality and the CycleOn somewhat lesser - do you see it that way? thanks.

Hey Roy, both the Saris CycleOn Bike Rack for 2 Bikes w/ Ramp - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches # SAR36XR and the Thule Epos Bike Rack part # TH99XE are really solid and nice bikes that are loaded with a lot of really well though out features. I don't think you'd have a drastically different experience with either rack and would be glad you went with either. The perception that the Thule is a lot better is a lot to do with brand recognition and fact they are known for making premium bikes racks...which they for sure do but the CycleOn is also what I would consier a premium bike rack as well.

If it were me and I was making the decision I would go with the CycleOn all day because it costs less and comes with the ramp. It also folds flatter than the Epos.

thanks! appreciate your take and I'm leaning the same way. main upside of the Epos for me is the lighter overall weight, which could turn out to be a deciding factor, though, if I use a swing-away adapter and reduce hitch capacity by 50%.

@RoyS yeah that's a good point as it is lighter weight at 38 lbs.
