Best Victron Orion DC-to-DC Charger for a 2018 Silverado and 2026 E-Pro 19FD

Question:

I have a 2018 silverado 1500 crewcab shortbox with 5.3l and towing package and a 2026 Epro 19FD trailer with 400w solar on roof 1800w inverter and will be adding a 314AH Lifepo4 battery. I want to install a dc to dc charger. looking at Victron Orion and wondering if I should get a 30A or 50A and whether I need isolated or non-isolated. Also, when installing if I go with bigger wires and an Anderson Style connector do I just leave the aux/charging pin on the 7 way from the truck alone or do I need to disconnect it because its redundant? Thanks!

Hey Kevin, thanks for reaching out. For your setup, go with the Victron Orion XS RV Converter -50A # VN93VR. With a 314Ah LiFePO4 battery, a 50-amp charger is a good match and will make much better use of your drive time than a 30-amp unit. Your Silverado has the charging system to support it, and with a battery that size, the extra charging current is definitely worthwhile. I also recommend the non-isolated version. Since your truck and trailer already share a common ground through the hitch and 7-way wiring, there's really no benefit to paying extra for the isolated model.

If you're running a dedicated set of larger cables with an Anderson connector, Leave the factory 7-way charge wire disconnected on the trailer side. The DC-to-DC charger should be the only charging path between the truck and trailer battery. Leaving the factory auxiliary charge wire connected creates a second, uncontrolled charging path that bypasses the DC-to-DC charger, which defeats one of the main reasons for installing it in the first place. The 7-way will still handle your lights, brakes, and other trailer functions just fine, you'll simply eliminate the charging function from that connector. That gives the Orion complete control over battery charging and prevents the two charging circuits from working against each other.
