Question:

Hello. I have just installed a Yakima Overhaul HD ladder rack on my Tundra with a 60inch crossbar. I would like to carry two Old Town Angler kayaks side by side with the Handroller. I know the kayaks will lay side by side with enough room but Im not sure the Handrollers can mount on the crossbar without the tower mounts interfering. Im thinking the Handrollers could mount inside the tower mounts and all will be fine. Any thoughts? I was hoping to order two 4 sets of rollers and take advantage of your free shipping offer but thought Id better ask for advice first. I have previous experience with you folks and you have been great. Thanks in advance.

Hey Christopher!

You won't be able to fit two sets of Yakima HandRoll Kayak Roof Rack w/ Tie-Downs - 1/2 System - Saddle Style w/ Rollers - Clamp On # Y04082 next to each other because they require a minimum of 24" between each roller, meaning you would need at least 72" of space to haul two Old Town Angler kayaks on your Overhaul HD ladder rack with the Handroll system.

Instead, I recommend going with Malone SeaWing Kayak Roof Rack w/ Load Assist and Tie-Downs - Saddle Style - Clamp On # MPG113MD. These saddles are 27-1/2" wide so since both of the kayaks are able to fit on the rack, the saddles will be able to support them. I've attached a customer photo below for you to see these installed in tandem on the roof of a Subaru Impreza. In my research, there are no roof racks wider than 58" for that vehicle, so I'm confident that this will work on your 60" ladder rack without interfering with the towers.

Where are you planning on taking those kayaks? Do you have any trips planned?

Hello Jerry, As promised I'm getting back to you about the Yakima HandRoll for my rack. First, I think you have a dimension wrong. The 24" minimum between rollers refers to the spread of the crossbars, that is front to back not side to side. I think this minimum spread is fairly standard for kayak/canoe roof racks. I know I have enough room on my Yakima OverHaul HD to put my two kayaks side by side. My question was about the fitment of the clasps that attach them to the crossbar and whether I can fit them either on the outboard side of the tower(I have about 2" of space there) or will they fit right over the crossbar where the tower attaches to it. The positioning of the HandRolls depends on the width of the kayaks at the crossbar point. I'm sorry if this is confusing but I wanted to correct you about the 24" spread requirement in case any one might get thrown off about that. Thanks for your help.

@ChristopherC That does seem to be correct, thanks for pointing that out! It is possible and it's not unheard of to install accessories on roof racks outside of the towers, but I don't recommend it. My big fear is that when not properly secured down, a foot (or in this case, a HandRoll) can slip off in the right conditions. It will work, but it's not the safest option.

Thanks Jerry, I hear you. I may not need to but properly installed I would hope this accessory doesn't slip no matter where on the crossbar it is installed. That could be a disaster any which way. Before I order them I'm going to try and get some more information for even better see them in person to determine their suitability for my rack.

Chris, I load a Hobie PA 12 on the Yakima Rack with the Yakima Handroll. I could probably squeeze another smaller Kayak with it. However, I don't like the Yakima Handroll because the wheels have never really assisted me in loading the Kayak. They are great for traveling down the road as they cushion the kayak. I push the kayak up on the Yakima Rack, slide the rollers underneath, lock them down, and then tie down the kayak. I have been doing that way years and the PA 12 is heavy. I have unlocked the wheels, tried placing them on the rack in reverse, nothing makes the the wheels on mine roll easy. I load mine on the racks attached to an F 250.
