How To Add Brakes to Old Military Trailer With Obsolete Spindle

Updated 07/02/2026 | Published 06/28/2026

Question:

I am in the process of converting an old military trailer to something i can use now. First on my list was changing the brake assembly because they were old and i wanted electric self adjsuting brakes. What i found is that the outer bearing is 2585 and the inner is 25580. I am not sure if there is hubs that are built that take that outer bearing anymore, can you advise on a product to purchase?

Hey Jace! That is correct, that bearing combination is obsolete and hubs are no longer available. You might be able to find something at an RV salvage yard but outside of that you're looking at either replacing the axle or replacing the spindle.

A lot of people add something like the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # ASR1THDS01 to those old military trailers like the M101. If you went this route you would also need # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K for a hub and drum assembly with # TRU36FR for self-adjusting brakes.

Which trailer do you have?
