The 1996 Chevy Suburban does not have any tow package wires or a plug to plug in a brake controller. You will need to hardwire in the controller. If you just need the red wire for the brake input, then to find it you will need to use a circuit tester such as # PTW2993.
You will probe the wires on the brake switch located above the brake pedal until you find the one that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed. If it has power with the headlights on or turn signals on then it is not the correct wire.
If you need to hardwire in everything, I have included some links that will help show and explain the hardwire installation.
If your Suburban does not already have a 7-Way trailer connector you will need to add one. First you would need a 4-Way connector (if not already present) # C55319. Then you would need installation kit # ETBC7.
If the Suburban does have a 7-Way already then you will just follow the relevant parts of the links I have provided to the right. You would not need ETBC7 in this case put you would need a wiring kit, # 5506 instead.
