Do I Need to Replace the Fuse Panel When Installing a PD4655V for Lithium Batteries?

Question:

I am replacing the parralax power center 7155 converter to the PD4655V. I am installing lithium iron phosphate battery and was wondering if I need to replace the fuse panel that has the wizard button on it that comes with the PD4655V or not for a lithium setup. Do I need to replace that? It doesnt matter if I need to or not im just wondering if I needed to or if the lithium setup doesnt require it then I can omit that from the install. I appreciate your time and response.

Thanks for writing in.

I reached out directly to Progressive Dynamics to verify this, and I need to correct part of my original answer. You do not have to use the replacement Progressive Dynamics fuse board for the # PD4655V to charge your lithium batteries.

The fuse board provides the Charge Wizard button and indicator light for manual operation, but it is not what puts the converter into lithium mode. The # PD4655V has a jumper on the converter itself that comes from the factory set for lead-acid batteries. For a lithium battery, that jumper needs to be moved so it connects the center pin and the LI pin.

Progressive Dynamics also confirmed that when the converter is set for lithium, you do not need the Charge Wizard button or light. If you want the manual Charge Wizard controls while using a different fuse board, there is also a separate pendant available.

I apologize for the confusion in my original answer. I had the lithium selection on this series mixed up with some of Progressive Dynamics' other converters that use a different method for selecting battery type.

This is actually for my dad's rv, im just trying to help him decide which unit he needs. I appreciate your help. Additionally, how many input watts does this unit use for lithium?

@Nick My pleasure Nick! The # PD4655V is a great choice because it will work with both traditional lead-acid batteries and LiFePO4 batteries. If your dad decides to go lithium now or down the road, the converter has a built-in lithium charging mode, so he's covered either way. As far as power consumption goes, the # PD4655V can put out up to 55 amps of charging current. At full output in lithium mode, you're looking at roughly 800 watts going to the battery bank. Since the converter isn't 100% efficient, it'll pull a little more than that from shore power. The actual amount it draws will vary depending on how low the batteries are and how hard the converter is working to recharge them. The good news is that it won't sit there drawing maximum power all the time. As the batteries charge up, the converter automatically tapers the charging current, so power consumption drops off as the batteries get closer to full.

Is this answer correct? Looking at the documentation for my PD4655V, setting it to charge LiFePO4 batteries is done by switching a jumper on the main board of the converter.
