Question:

Hello. Im overhauling a 10 1 ft utility trailer 5 ft wide currently has three leaf springs on each side that measure 20 in from front to back center eye of the bolt w/GAWR 1,500 lbs. Im shopping around for replacements and I would also like to view any upgrade options for my trailer to four leafs if possible. please provide me with any options you have for this trailer that Im trying to upgrade and overhaul. thank you

Hey Raymond. The closest 4-leaf leaf spring we have to your measurements is the Dexter item # DX73CR. It measures 20-1/2" long from eye-to-eye and has a 1,400 lbs capacity. This leaf spring is sold individually but it is highly recommend to replace all of your leaf springs at the same time.

How did you measure the eye-to-eye distance on your leaf springs? If the weight of your trailer was still on them you most likely need a shorter leaf spring like the 18-5/16" Long item # SP-072275.

The leaf spring upgrade is the most direct method of increasing the carrying capacity of the trailer. But there's another trick you can do to increase the trailer capacity. Most of these trailers come with the axle running over the top of the leaf springs. This lowers the rear of the trailer so that loading & unloading is easier. However, it also lowers the fender relative to the wheel so that a heavy load will cause the tire to rub against the fender. By running the axle under the leaf springs the distance between the tire and fender increases, so that the tire will never rub against the fender. This actually is stronger that the over the springs scheme as the axle bears directly against the springs as opposed to the axle hanging by the U-bolt. Use the same hardware to hold the axle in place. The rear of the trailer will ride a little higher, but in most cases, that's a good thing.

I went four leaf Springs added a V frame to the front instead of one draw bar because it was rocking back-and-forth. I added two larger wheels and two spacers that were an inch and a half. I think both, to push the wheels away from the frame. I use another trailer fender. . I bought a really nice wire harness that ran on both sides instead of one side because I wanted to make sure that the wires were secure and I didn’t like crossing over the rear. I built a ramp on the back and a motorcycle chalk and I carry a 850 pound bike. The trailer with the front end welded up in a Y instead of the single draw bar on the smaller garden trailer. Now the trailer doesn’t rock back-and-forth. The bike was top-heavy and when I went down the road with a single draw bar, you could see in the rear of your mirror that that Trailer was rocking from side to side not back-and-forth but actually going down on one spring and coming up on the other. Now it doesn’t do any of that. It’s solid and I got the garden trailer dirt cheap and after all of my modifications, I traded that bike in for a 2025 and it’s 100 pounds lighter but it’s still pulls it just like there’s nothing behind the pick up. I can’t send pictures. I tried, but I can’t paste pictures or I would paste the front end the spring situation with the taller shackles to raise the frame a little bit higher off the ground the bigger wheels that I bought at E Trailer along with all of the rest of the parts. If I was to go out and purchase a motorcycle trailer, it would’ve cost me three times as much, but I’m a little bit handy with Welding.

The trailer is up on blocks and I measured 20" from eye to eye. 1 3/4" across the existing 3 leafs ok their now. The circumference of the axle is 5 1/2". I'm not sure what else I can provide for this. I would like 4 leafs for an upgrade is that makes sense. Longer U-bolts to fit that too. I wouldn't want to go with a shorter measurement eye to eye. First time for me doing this. So I'm not sure what to do. R

@RaymondG Thanks for the information Raymond. The 20-1/2" Dexter item # DX73CR leaf springs are going to be my only option. Since you have a 1-3/4" diameter axle, you'll need the 1-3/4" Round Trailer U-Bolt item # SP01-020. This kit comes with two 4-1/4" Long U-bolts.
