Can I Use Ultra Fab Tow Bar If I Don't Know Which Base Plates My Car Has?

Published 06/03/2026

Question:

I bought a used Jeep that already has base plates, but I don’t know if they’re Roadmaster or Blue Ox. Can I still pick one of these Ultra-Fab tow bars?

Hey Tyler! You can use one of these Ultra-Fab tow bars, but we’ll want to identify the base plates first so we match the right connection. As long as the tow bar is matched correctly - or paired with the correct adapter - you won’t be forcing the pins or risking damage to the base plate tabs.

If the Jeep has Roadmaster base plates, you’d use # UF35XR for an 8,000 lb tow bar or # UF45XR for a 12,000 lb tow bar. If it has Blue Ox base plates, you’d use # UF55XR for 8,000 lbs or # UF95XR for 12,000 lbs. Once we know the base plate brand, choosing the tow bar is pretty straightforward.

A quick clue is the shape of the connection. Blue Ox-style base plates usually use a single tab on each removable arm that fits between the tow bar’s triple-lug end. Roadmaster direct-connect setups use removable arms that pair with Roadmaster-style two-prong clevis ends. Older Roadmaster crossbar-style base plates may also use a separate horizontal quick-disconnect crossbar.

The easiest way to confirm it is with a photo of the front attachment points or the part number from the base plate. What year Jeep did you buy, Tyler, and are you setting it up for a first flat-tow trip?
