Hey Carl, while some of them may be cross-compatible, the main difference comes down to the fact that electric winches for boat trailers are rated more more exposure to water, and also the design makes it easier to bolt onto the front of a boat trailer.

Check out the attached images. You'll noticed the boat trailer electric winch # DL25200 is more enclosed, and has a compact design and different bolt pattern under it compared to the ATV winch # e98988 I've also attached pictures of.

Also, the cables themselves are usually different. The boat trailer winch has a marine rated flat cable, whereas the ATV winch has a standard cable.

What application are you trying to put a winch on?

Hey Carl, this winch has been awesome. We do a lot of fishing in northern Michigan and I purchased this for my buddy whose shoulder is pretty much shot. It’s been a great addition. He has a fiberglass Hyde drift boat and trailer and it’s a smooth as butter getting the boat in. Unit is self enclosed so nothing gets wet or rusted. It was pretty easy to set up the electrical on the truck. I highly recommend it. We absolutely love it. The only suggestion I think is go with the strap and not the rope as the rope tends to bind up. strap seems to be much more reliable.
