Recommended SumoSprings for a 2001 Ford F-250 w/a In Bed Camper

Updated 05/28/2026 | Published 05/21/2026

Question:

Id like some advice about enhancing my truck for hauling a slide in pickup camper and towing a boat behind it. 2001 Ford F250 with factory camper setup including upper and lower rear overload springs. I have added Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks and Torklift StableLoads on the lower rear overload springs. I am hauling a Lance Lite 835 and towing a boat, with the total weight added to the suspension being about 2,700 pounds. The addition of the StableLoads and Rancho Shocks reduced the rear sag and side to side sway quite a bit so the struck actually drives quite well. I am deciding whether to leave well enough alone or to see if I can reduce the rear end sag anymore and potentially reduce some more sway. I have had Timbrens on another truck and didnt like the ride when empty and have a couple f riends that felt that air bags made their slide in campers sway worse and went back to the Torklift Stable loads. Ive looked at the Super Spring SumoSprings and Super Sway stops. Would either of these be an imnprovement, or do you suggest something else. Or maybe I should leave things alone since it already drives well except for having a little sag than I would like. Thanks

Hey Kevan, thanks for all the information! Good call taking a hard pass on the Timbren's. The SumoSprings you referenced are the only thing I would recommend adding to your setup and coincidentally enough we have two sets that will work that have a 2,800 lbs capacity. Which ones you go with are going to be determined by whether or not your 2001 Ford F-250 is 2WD or 4WD. I have listed the options below:

2WD - SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs item # SSR-114-54

4WD - SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs item # SS84VR

I prefer the SumoSprings because of their progressive rate. They only engage to support your suspension when weight is placed on them. This avoids the discomfort like the Timbren's cause when you're not towing your trailer or driving around with the camper in the bed. They will help reduce sway and address sagging.

I attached a couple of pictures below and linked the installation instructions. With the addition of the Rancho shocks, I highly recommend checking to make sure you won't have any compatibility issues. The stable loads won't cause any interference but if the new shocks didn't reuse the factory mounts there could be something in the way.

How much sag are you running into when you're fully loaded and are your leaf springs the original ones?

Hi Jerred, The Rancho shocks utilize the factory mounts so there should be no problem there, the springs are the original springs 135k miles. I estimate the rear suspension sags around 4 inches when fully loaded, I also took a measurement of 3 inches between the upper overload spring and the rubber spring insulator when unloaded if that makes any difference. I tried to attach a picture of the truck unloaded and loaded for a point of reference but wasn't able to attach the photos to the reply. Will the SumoSprings keep the factory upper overload from engaging? Thanks

@KevanB Ok, good then the shocks won't be in the way. Your leaf springs are pretty close to the end of their lifetime so it may be worth looking into. No, SumoSprings will not prevent your factory overload spring from engaging.

I installed the yelow Sumo helpers on my 2000 f250 4wd crew cab short bed. Pulling a 12k trailer with 1400 lbs tongue weight, and camper shell with 700 lbs cargo. The Sumos with load leveler hitch helped with sway and eliminated tail sag on truck. Running empty I didn't notice much difference in ride, but I also have 10 ply tires at 80psi, so ride is already stiff.
