How Do I Know Which Replacement Safety Pin I Need For Enclosed Trailer Coupler Latch?

Published 05/18/2026

Question:

I need a replacement safety pin for the latch on my small enclosed trailer coupler. The hole looks like 1/4 inch, but I’m not sure if I need the 2-1/2 inch or 3-1/2 inch RV Designer pin. How do I pick?

Good morning Dennis! The easiest way to choose between the RV Designer Safety Lock Pin # RD72GR and # RD22GR is to measure the overall width of your coupler latch area.

If your coupler latch area is a fairly standard size, the RV Designer Safety Lock Pin # RD72GR gives you a 1/4" diameter pin with a 2-1/2" usable length. If the coupler body or latch area is wider, the RV Designer Safety Lock Pin # RD22GR gives you the same 1/4" diameter but stretches that usable length to 3-1/2".

If you can measure from the outside of one latch tab to the outside of the other, that’ll tell us which one makes the most sense. Dennis, feel free to send that measurement over and we can help narrow it down. It wouldn't hurt to just get the bigger one if you aren't sure, as going to big won't be an issue with coupler pins.
