Best Air Conditioner w/ Built in Heat Pump and Variable Speed Compressor for a Ductless Setup

Updated 05/14/2026 | Published 05/08/2026

Question:

I am looking for a rooftop a/c unit for my 2026 ATC ROM 450. It’s roughed in for a 14 1/4” x 14 1/4” opening. I need a 13,500, ductless with the controls on the distribution box. A heat pump would be great, but not necessary. Variable speed compressor preferable. I am a big fan quality and don’t mind paying extra for better quality. What would be the BEST unit for my setup? Thank you

Congrats on the new trailer Greg! For your 2026 ATC ROM 450, I recommend the Furrion Variable Speed Chill Cube RV Air Conditioner w/ Heat Pump item # FR87TQ in black or item # FR77TQ in white. These are complete AC systems that include a built in heat pump, along with a air distribution box designed for ductless setups that has built in controls, and a convenient remote. If your goal is quality then one of these systems are exactly what you need.

To get an AC unit with a variable speed compressor you'll need to jump up to a 18,000 btu capacity. From what I could find online it looks like your car hauler has a pre-installed 120V wiring harness ran as part of the AC prep. You will want to ensure it's wired to it's own 20 amp breaker. The AC draws 15.8 amps and the heater pulls 11.9 amps.

What kind of cars do you haul and do you plan on running on air compressor?

Jerred Thank you for your response. I really like that a/c unit. My first concern would be my generator. I current own an Onan 2500 watt gas generator. I don’t think it’s big enough to run that a/c unit? If it is, I think I would buy it. I like the digital readout and the remote control. From what I’ve read, the Furrion is a good unit. I bought this trailer to haul several vehicles. We have a 1967 Camaro, a well equipped 1998 Jeep Cherokee (for off road) and I’m currently building a 1947 International KB1 hot rod with a late model GMC 6.2 V8 and a 10 speed automatic Thanks again for help (:

@GregS You're welcome! Your Onan 2500 watt gas generator is definitely strong enough. The Furrion Variable Speed Chill Cube RV Air Conditioner w/ Heat Pump item # FR87TQ in black or item # FR77TQ in white only pull 1,480 watts on the turbo setting in high heat. The fan and heat pump are well below that. These are designed to run on a 2000 watt generator. They have a inverter compressor that ramps up slowly so you don't have that peak draw when it kicks on. That's a nice collection of vehicles. I was making sure you weren't setting up a race car hauler that had an air compressor running a bunch pulling a ton of watts.

@JerredH Jerred, Wow!! First of all, thank you so much for responding! Most especially on a Sunday :) Great news too! So happy I won’t need to buy a larger generator and will have a very efficient a/c unit (: And also a heat pump for those cooler mornings. The only other thing we may need to run is our ARB portable fridge. We have a little ARB air compressor mounted to our truck should we need air. I really appreciate your help. I’ll be ordering the unit today

@GregS You're welcome! You'll be good then, especially with your ARB portable fridge. They don't pull many watts. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

So 15.8 amps is the absolute maximum current draw, even at start up? Sound level ratings at high and low settings?

@DaveF Yes, that is correct. The Chill Cubes have a sound rating of 55 and 60 decibels.
