Can The Caliber ProTech XT Flooring Be Used Over A Metal Mesh Floor?

Updated 04/30/2026 | Published 04/28/2026

Question:

Hello, Looking at options other than installing a wood floor on my trailer. How would the trailer flooring work on an open 5 x 10 utility trailer with a current metal mesh floor? Thank you

Hey Ross, thanks for reaching out, and good question. That’s one of those setups that can work, but it’s not really what that flooring is designed for. The Caliber ProTech XT Flooring # CA89AJ is meant to sit on a solid surface so it can spread the load and stay flat. On a metal mesh floor, you’ve got all those gaps underneath, so the tiles don’t have full support. What ends up happening is they flex between the openings and feel a little spongy, especially if you’re putting any weight on them.

If your mesh is really tight and you’re just walking on it or throwing light gear on there, you might get by for a while. But if you’re loading anything with real weight or rolling equipment, it’s going to stress those tiles and they won’t hold up the way they should. The better way to do it, if you want to skip a full wood deck, is lay down some kind of solid base first, even thin sheet metal or composite panels, then put the ProTech on top. That way it actually performs like it’s supposed to instead of just covering the mesh.

What do you mostly haul in your trailer?
