Camper Van Upgrading To 24V Battery Setup - What Is The Best Inverter To Use?

Published 04/22/2026

Question:

I’m upgrading to a 24V battery setup in my van. Is the VN44RR the right inverter, or should I just stay 12V and use something like VN55ZR?

Hey Tyler, if you’re already planning a 24V battery system, then the 24v 1,000w Victron Phoenix inverter # VN44RR is the right match. These are among the best quality inverters on the market, and this one comes protected with GFCI outlets and a peak wattage of 2,200w for startup surges.

Compared to a 12V inverter like # VN55ZR, the 24V setup will:
-Cut your current roughly in half (this is a good thing)
-Reduce heat and voltage
-Allow for smaller wiring

You’re not gaining more total power - just using it more efficiently with less chances of overheating components/wires.

If you were staying 12V, the # VN55ZR would be a great simple option, but once you step into 24V, the # VN44RR is the correct fit. Just keep in mind you will likely need a stepdown reducer for your 12v dc lights and loads so you can use something like the # VN32ZR.

Are you building this system from scratch or converting an existing setup? And what all are you trying to power off the inverter?
