Roof Rating of 2026 Corolla Cross For Roof Rack

Question:
I will be buying a 2026 Corolla Cross soon and will be buying an aftermarket roof rack system for it. The info in the Toyota manual, online and at the dealer is confusing. I am hoping eTrailer has a confidence-building answer. The Toyota manual says 75 lb max load, the 3rd party racks say 165 lb max. It is not clear if Toyota is rating their thin OEM bars or the mounting points on the roof. Third party racks may be strong, but are they stronger than the roof design?

Hey Bob! This can definitely get confusing and a lot of manufacturers don't make it clear. The 75 lbs in the manual is the capacity for the roof luggage carrier, so probably their OEM bars. It is not the roof capacity.
They don't list it directly, but through some spec sheets it looks like it has a dynamic capacity of 165 lbs. I still recommend verifying that with Toyota. This is in line with common capacities so I expect that to be accurate. If you add a roof rack like the Yakima SkyLine Roof Rack # Y95KD you were looking at, you will be limited to the roof capacity even though these can handle 220 lbs.

Hey Bob I own a 2025 Toyota Carolla cross with Yakima cross bars and roof rack and I get a lot of use out of it. I originally bought it for when I go camping, I need a place to put all the bulky light things such as my sleeping bags, tent, outdoor couch (I camp in style) and it does a wonderful job with that. I even made a custom cargo net that really helps to hold everything in and it works great. Lately I’ve been using the top rack to transport lumber from the lumberyard back to my house for various woodworking projects I’ve been working on. I’ve probably put more than 75lbs up there but use caution if you do this and use a lot of ratchet straps. 75+lbs of cargo weighs a lot more in motion than at rest… think G-forces, wind drag… a sudden stop can send your cargo into the car in front of you if not secured properly. Not too sure how the 2026 cross holds up the roof rack but the 2025 uses landing pads that screw directly into the cars frame and I’ve found this to be extremely strong. Hope this helps to answer your question. TLDR; Carolla Cross + aftermarket roof rack definitely sees a lot of use and worth it 100%.
