Is Thule TopRide Safe At Highway Speeds

Updated 04/26/2026 | Published 04/13/2026

Question:

Is this safe to transport a bike at highway speeds? There are places I like to ride that are 3 to 6 hours away. I like the apparent ease of the click in mount...but how secure is that...especially over time with use at highway speeds? I have a thru axle bike 12X120. Does this include what I need to mount this bike on this roof rack?

Hi C; the Thule TopRide Roof Bike Rack for 1 Bike # TH75JV is safe to use at highway speeds. The rack is rated for 80 mph so as long as you don't go over that, or exceed the 40 lb capacity, you won't have an issue.

However, if you truly have a 12x120 axle it will not fit the bike rack as is. Thule does not make an adapter for that size, so you would have to get a custom one to mount it on the bike rack. If it is actually a 12x100 or 15x110 Boost then it works with the included adapters.

Where do you typically ride?

It's a Salsa Journeyer drop bar. It says 12 120 on the thru axel when I took it off to look at it. It's my first thru- axel bike.
