Recommended 5th Wheel Rails and Brackets for a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 w/a 30,000 lbs 5th Wheel Hitch

Updated 03/05/2026 | Published 02/10/2026

Question:

Looking for a needle in a hay stack. I have a 2006 ram 3500 that had the non-standard rails put in it back in 2006. I currently have a used 16K hitch in it, but need at least a 20K. I am having a hard time finding a hitch that fits my rails. The measurement for my rails... the two farthest pin holes are 19.5 inches center to center. So I will need a hitch with the mounting pin holes 19.5 inches apart. I really do not want to change the rails due to the truck being rhino lined AFTER the rails were installed. A 25K or 30K hitch would be ever better. So please give me some good news as to what hitch I need. THANKS!!

Hey Joe. Sorry but I do not have any hitches that fit 5th wheel rails with a 19.5" spaced mounting holes. They all fit the industry standard 20-1/2" spacing now unless it's a proprietary hitch. My only option is going to be the one you don't want to do.

To use the Curt PowerRide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch item # C22ER you were looking at, Curt Universal Fifth Wheel Base Rails item # C99JR and the Curt Semi-Custom Fifth Wheel Bracket Kit for Dodge Ram 2500/3500 item # C16301. The PowerRide item # C22ER has a massive 30,000 lbs capacity and the recommend rails and brackets are the only option available that works with this 5th wheel hitch.

The Curt Universal Fifth Wheel Base Rails item # C99JR are made of alloy steel and have a rust-resistant Teridium powder coat finish. You won't have to worry about these rails rusting or corroding after you remove the Rhino lined ones you currently have.

What 5th wheel hitch are you currently using and do you see any part numbers or markings on the brackets for your 5th wheel rails?

Hey Joe, did you end up switching to the Curt PowerRide hitch and new base rails for your Ram? I'm curious how the change went after removing the old rhino-lined rails. Your experience could help others dealing with non-standard rail spacing.

@JerredH Hey Jerred. I did not end up changing my old rails out. After more research, I found out that the legs on my 16K hitch are the same as a 20K hitch. I have a Reese unit. I bought a 20K "head" and just put it on my 16K legs and kept the same rails. My unit is just under 18K fully loaded (including a 98 gallon fresh water tank.) I will not be pulling it with a full tank so I am just over 17K on total weight. I did not want to take all of that stuff up and change the rails so I went a different route. Thanks for the reply and keep up the good work.

@JoeB You're welcome! Glad you were able to get it all sorted out and not have to chip off all of that bed liner.
