Is The Demco eZ-Latch Gooseneck Coupler DM43KV Safe To Use On A Dump Trailer?

Updated 02/11/2026 | Published 02/08/2026

Question:

Is this coupler safe to use on a dump trailer. I’m sure it is but I was unsure being that the coupler doesn’t have a safety pin and when the trailer is in use the weight will come off the ball and put all the pressure on the latch itself

Hello Eli, thanks for reaching out. Yes, the Demco EZ-Latch Gooseneck Coupler # DM43KV is safe to use on a dump trailer. The key thing to understand is that the weight of the trailer is still carried by the ball, not by the latch itself. The EZ-Latch design automatically locks around the ball and stays engaged under both push and pull, even as the trailer angle changes during dumping. The latch isn’t acting as a load-bearing pin in normal use, it’s simply retaining the coupler on the ball.

Since this coupler is a replacement inner tube, it’s designed to be used with the existing outer tube and safety pin that came on your trailer. That pin still goes through the outer tube as usual, so you’re not losing any structural security compared to a traditional setup. As long as the coupler is rated appropriately for your trailer and installed correctly, it’s a solid and commonly used option on dump trailers.

What kind of dump trailer do you have?

@Urban That's no lightweight setup either! Glad to hear the Demco coupler is holding up. Thanks for sharing!
