can air be added to the air lift bags when the load is attached or should it be added before the load is attached to the hitch?

Hey Rob, welcome back! You can add or remove air to the Air Lift 1000 air bags item # AL60830 at any time. For your use you're definitely going to want to fine tune the PSI in the air bags when you're all loaded up. That includes the trailer connected and whatever gear you plan on throwing in the bed.
An onboard air compressor like the Air Lift WirelessONE item # AL25980 would allow you to adjust the PSI in your air bags from your phone.
