USB Connection on Front of Goal Zero Yeti 1500X Lithium Portable Power Station # GZ64FR

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 12/25/2025

Question:

I had a professional to install the car kit into my Chevy 3500 diesel dually- unfortunately the short cable to the battery with the large connector was impossible to get through any place on the firewall. He used a large electric wires that are typically used on boats to go through the firewall large gauge wires of same gauge of the kit . He then ran these wires hidden under the console to the rear of the console- then connected to a bar with input and output connections- he then hooked up the fuse of the kit to the output of the system/ it looks great but I noticed he never connected the usb cable. I have no idea what the usb cable is utilizes as it only describes as a communication cable. I haven’t tried to use the system since I made this discovery as the fear of damaging my truck’s electrical system or heaven knows since all the “ terror about lithium battery fires “ I am hundreds of miles from the installation person before I noticed the usb cable not connected- I am capable of removing the screws and plugging in the USB if necessary- I just need some professional advice.

Hey Kenneth, are you referring to the Goal Zero Yeti 1500X Lithium Portable Power Station # GZ64FR that you referenced and the USB ports that are on the front of the unit?

Hey Kenneth, were you able to confirm if the USB cable you found was part of the Goal Zero Yeti 1500X setup? Knowing what you discovered could help others who run into the same wiring question.

@JamesonC I don’t think you understood my question; however I appreciate your response. My question was in regards to the usb cable on the yeti car kit- I finally got a response from goal zero and the connection is absolutely necessary- it was extremely difficult to insert into the unit and it immediately went into upgrade mode to the yeti system. It now works from the Chevy 3500 alternator and charges really fast. I really don’t think I will use the system except when I am driving as I don’t need to be way off grid and have a dead truck battery . Goal zero kit is more for a van conversion and really unsuitable for as advertised- but with proper professional installation can work!
