What Safety Chains Should Be Used For A 5,000 lb Travel Trailer?

Updated 12/26/2025 | Published 12/23/2025

Question:

I want to replace the safety chains on our 5,000 lb travel trailer. What weight chain capacity should I be looking at? Double the weight or triple? Thanks!

Hello Stacy, thanks for reaching out. For a 5,000 lb travel trailer, you want the pair of safety chains to be rated to at least the trailer’s GVWR, and in most cases the easiest rule is to make sure each individual chain has a working load limit at or above half the trailer weight. So for 5,000 lbs, you’d be looking for chains that are 2,500 lbs WLL per chain minimum, and it’s totally fine (and common) to step up from there.

That said, I recommend the following:

- 48" Long Safety Chain with 3/8" S-Hook - 3,000 lbs - Qty 1 # TCTSCG30-5548-03x2

These are rated for 3,000 lbs each. Just make sure the 48" long chain is appropriate for your trailer and you will be good to go.

What kind of trailer do you have?

The chains are made well. As long as they are the correct size and length they should work fine.
