Question:
My utility trailer has open stake pockets but also a full side rail. Do the flat hooks sit securely on a rounded rail, or do they need a square edge?

Expert Reply:
Landon, flat hooks like the ones on the # e72SV straps really need a flat or square trailer rail (or standard rectangular stake pocket) to sit properly. They won’t get a solid bite on a pipe-style round rail, because the hook can’t fully seat against a curved surface. If your trailer has open stake pockets with a flat surface inside them, you can still use the flat hooks there - just not on the round top rail itself.
If your main tie-down points are that pipe rail, you’ll want the double-J straps # e42SV or the S-hook straps # e92NR, since both of those styles latch securely to smaller welded loops or D-rings without relying on the rail shape, or they can wrap around the bar. You may be better off using one of these J/S strap kits along with a loop strap like # e74BR to go around the trailer's round tubing.
What do you think, Landon? Which type of tie down do you plan to use on your trailer - stake pockets or something else)?
