How To Increase Bed Rail Clearance When Pulling 5th Wheel Camper With 2024 Ford F-450

Published 12/16/2025

Question:

I have a ford f450 4x4 with 8ft bed, I am having a slight issue with vertical bed rails clearance I currently have the following set up- MORryde Cushioned 5th Wheel Pin Box for Trailers Over 18K w/ Lippert 1621SHD Trailair Coupled to the BandW puck system fifth wheel hitch. I am considering switching to a gen y executive 5th wheel gooseneck coupler. My question is will this increase my vertical bed rails clearance, or could you offer a solution that will? The trailer is a DRV fullhouse lx455, GTW 24000lbs

Hey Ryan, thanks for reaching out. Switching from your MORryde pin box to the Gen-Y Executive gooseneck won’t automatically give you more bed-rail clearance. Both pin boxes use the same bolt pattern and ride in roughly the same vertical space, so you don’t really “gain” height by swapping. Sometimes the Gen-Y sits a touch different, but not enough to treat it as a fix.

That said, the correct Gen-Y Executive hitch for your camper is the following:

- Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box - Lippert 1621/1621HD - 30K GTW - 6.5K TW # GY95GR

The real way to get more clearance is by adjusting what you already have. Raise the hitch head on your B&W hitch to the highest setting, or drop the pin box a set of holes, and recheck your rail clearance. Ideally you want around six inches. If you still don’t have enough, then the fix comes from the trailer side with a suspension lift or taller hangers.

The Correct Track Trailer Alignment and Lift Kit # RR23QX can be used to add 1-1/4" of lift to a tandem axle trailer with leaf spring suspension. Or you can use the # RR55QX kit for 2-1/4" of lift.

About how much lift are you thinking you need?

Thank you so much, I never thought of raising the trailer. I will try this trailer alignment kit, because I already have the B&W at the highest setting.

@Ryan Glad to help! Yes at this point raising the trailer is really the only option for increasing the bed rail clearance. Keep in mind we do want the trailer to tow as level as possible. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help!

@JesseM So to be clear if I need to raise it 2 1/4" I need to buy 2 of the RR55QX kits? I need to set the trailer down on the truck amd determine how much lift I need

@Ryan So if you need the full 2-1/4" of lift for a tandem axle trailer you actually need to order one of the triple axle kits part # RR55QX. This comes with the correct quantity of brackets to do the full 2-1/4" lift on all the hangers.
