Is The DeeZee Custom Fit Truck Bed Mat Easy To Cut? Does It Have A Strong Rubber Odor

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 12/13/2025

Question:

How easy is it to cut out for the puck system? Any recommended method or tool to cut out? Does this mat have any odor to it, some brands do.

Hi Jim, thanks for the questions. Cutting the DeeZee Custom-Fit Truck Bed Mat # DZ28GJ for the puck system is very manageable since the material is thick but still easy to work with. The best method is to set the mat in the bed, mark the puck locations from underneath, and then use a sharp utility knife or a hole saw to make clean cutouts. Most people prefer a utility knife because you can control the size gradually and get a very snug fit.

As far as the odor, that was a good question so I went out to our warehouse so I could smell one for myself. It does smell like a bed mat, but the odor was not too strong or offensive. It didn't really smell like chemicals or have a harsh smell like other rubber mats. Generally the nyracord is not too bad. Keep in mind this thing was still in the bag when I smelled it, I just poked a small hole in the bag. I am sure once it airs out, the rubber smell would dissipate and would not be noticeable.

I go out to our warehouse quite often to measure parts, but this is the first time I went out there to smell something haha. I'd like to see AI do that! lol

Seriously though, I hope this helps. Don't hesitate to reach out if there is anything else you need!

I purchased one of these mats because I wanted something heavy duty and that's what it is very good quality mat. As far as fitting it in the truck it was very stiff and hard to unroll but it was winter time and rolled up so got it in where it was warm and that helped but it didn't really relax and lay perfectly flat until the sun got on it. When I cut out my 5th wheel ball and chain hooks I laid out where they were and got a hole saw and cut them way easier and cleaner than a knife just make sure you get a little bigger hole saw than you need for clearance to unlock the ball and pucks the mat is pretty thick and you won't be able to go bigger once you drill the hole. Hope this helps

@HankW Thanks for taking the time to share all this, Hank. Really appreciate the detailed feedback. Getting the mat warmed up is a great tip. Those heavy duty mats can be stubborn in cold weather, so letting the sun soften it up definitely makes sense. And your method for cutting out the 5th wheel ball and chain hook openings is spot on. A hole saw really does give a cleaner cut, and going slightly larger for puck clearance is a smart move since the mat’s thickness doesn’t leave much room for adjustments afterward. Thanks again for the helpful insights!

I purchased one of these mates for my 2022 Ram 3500 because we carry a large truck camper in the bed. The mat is used to help the unit not slide while in use. This heavy duty mat took a few days sitting out in the sun to flatten out but fit well in the bed - just a little trimming next to the tailgate to sit flat. The pad is thick and heavy so it feels like it will last a long time.

@KenS Thanks for sharing, Ken. Sounds like you did exactly the right thing letting the mat warm up in the sun. You aren't the first person to mention warming up the mat helps. Glad to hear it fit well after a bit of trimming and that it’s doing a good job keeping your truck camper from sliding around. Great to know it’s working out for you!

Reply to someone asking about the mat - I love the mat and would buy it again. It works perfect and is not too thin. It keeps things from sliding and I originally wanted to keep my skis from sliding and keep the edges from getting damaged. I also wanted a little give for my slide in truck camper and mats are suggested online. The end does stay curled until it's warm outside so if you buy it this time of year (winter) stick it in your livingroom and actively try to get the curl out from being rolled up. Maybe flip it over and add some books or something while warm inside. It did fine with the curled edge this summer but was bent all winter. So try the living room idea. 5 stars

@Josh Thanks for the detailed feedback, Josh. Great tips on dealing with the curl in colder weather. Warming it up and adding a little weight is solid advice for anyone picking one up in the winter. Glad to hear the mat’s been working so well for your camper setup and keeping everything in place. Really appreciate you sharing your experience.

Hi Jesse, i used a hole saw and it worked well for cutting out the holes for the puck system. Just have to work at it as it is very thick and then you can put your hitch through the holes and it works very well. It takes a bit for it to lay flat but when it does it it's a awesome bed mat.

@Norman Nice! Glad to hear you are happy with the mat. Sounds like the hole saw is definitely the way to go for cutting it. So far pretty much everyone else that has replied on here said the same thing. I definitely appreciate you taking the time to share! I hope you and your family have a great Christmas!

I never cut them out. I used it to place a truck camper on top of.
