2025 Silverado 2500 Headlights Point Up And Back Squats When Pulling Equipment Trailer

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 12/09/2025

Question:

Whenever I hook up my equipment trailer to my 2025 Silverado 2500, the back sags almost 3 inches and my headlights are pointing up and blinding oncoming traffic. What’s the best way to level the truck back out?

Jason, that’s a classic Silverado squat issue, and the cleanest fix is adding some rear suspension enhancement. I prefer an adjustable rear support like the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Suspension with wireless compressor # F64XV. Those air bags give you up to 5,000 lbs of load-leveling support, so you can bring the rear right back to factory ride height.

Since this kit is wireless, you can stand next to the trailer jack, watch the truck rise, and stop when your stance and headlights look right again. If you don't always haul, this is great so you can deflate the bags a bit to go back to a factory ride height and comfort.

What’s your estimated tongue weight on that equipment trailer?

Thanks Andrew. I don’t know the exact tongue weight, but the truck drops right at 3 inches when I load the trailer. Should I air the bags first or adjust my hitch height first?

@Jason I your case you’ll want to get the hitch height sorted first, then use the airbags to fine-tune the squat. So the basic order is: 1.) Set your ball mount / coupler height (or gooseneck/5th wheel height) so the trailer sits level under load. 2.) Once the trailer is loaded and on the truck and you know the trailer is level, use the # F64XV airbags to bring the rear of the Silverado back up so the truck isn’t squatting and the headlights aren’t pointing up. Airbags are there to correct how the truck sits with the weight already on it - not to replace getting the trailer level in the first place. Now if you had a weight distribution hitch, that would change things a bit. You'd still want to try and get everything level with the adjustable height of the WDH, but you'd want to air the bags up first, THEN engage the WDH with the trunnion bars or whatever your system uses.
