Will Front Axle SumoSprings SSF-281-47 Fit 2006 Chevy Kodiak C4500 4x4? Or Are They 2WD Only?

Question:

I have a 2006 C4500 Kodiak 4x4. The ad says 2wd, but wondering what the reasoning is for not fitting the 4x4 version. I have heard the sumo springs really help with the short choppy bumps. Regards, Jim

Hey Jim, thanks for reaching out. The # SSF-281-47 SumoSprings kit is listed as 2WD only part because the front suspension layout on a C4500 Kodiak is different between the 2WD and 4x4 versions. The 4x4 trucks have additional components, mainly the front differential, axle housing, and different steering geometry. That changes the available space and the way the factory bump stop mounts. The SumoSpring replaces that bump stop, so if the dimensions or travel don’t match the 4x4 setup, it can interfere with suspension movement or steering components.

So the part may physically bolt on, but it hasn’t been tested or approved for the 4x4 configuration, and there’s a real chance of clearance issues under compression. That’s why the manufacturer and most retailers restrict it to 2WD models.

Sadly I am not seeing we have any suspension enhancement option for the 4x4 at this time.

Hey Jim, were you able to find a suspension option that works with your 4x4 Kodiak? Knowing what solution you landed on could help others with the same setup.
