Does The P&F Ladder Rack For Enclosed Trailers Allow You To Haul Kayaks On Top Of 6x12 Trailer?

Updated 12/16/2025 | Published 12/03/2025

Question:

Does the PF69VR work for kayaks too, or is it mainly for ladders? I’m converting my 6×12 trailer for weekend trips.

Hey Mia! Yes, The P&F Ladder Rack for enclosed trailers # PF69VR is great for kayaks. The aluminum crossbars are corrosion-resistant, and the rack mounts solidly to your trailer’s side rails using that 6inch × 2inch bracket, so it’s stable enough for long recreational gear. Just add padding or foam blocks on the bars and strap the kayak down at two points on each side. Keep in mind, you won't be able to actually use a kayak carrier cradle that attaches to industry standard crossbars, since this ladder rack setup doesn't have standard crossbars; just wanted to put that out there.

One other thing to keep in mind is there’s no set weight rating - not because the rack is weak, but because the limiting factor is your trailer’s wall/rail structure, which varies from brand to brand.

What kayak lengths are you running? Happy to help fine-tune your setup, or find an alternative if you do want to use kayak carriers or J-style cradles.

Awesome! my kayak is about 65 lbs. Is foam padding enough, or should I bolt on some kind of bracket to keep it from sliding?

@Mia 65 lbs is no problem for the # PF69VR, and foam padding is usually all you need. Just strap the kayak down at the bow and stern plus two points across the bars. Since the crossbars aren’t standard rack shapes, bolting on aftermarket brackets won’t really line up correctly, so padding + straps is the way to go.
