Can A Second Tier Be Added To Malone MicroSport LowBed Trailer?

Updated 11/20/2025 | Published 11/16/2025

Question:

I have a Malone microsport lowbed dual kayak trailer. Is there an attachment to add a second tier for a third kayak? Also, will this trailer support the weight of three : Oldtown 120 Autopilots?

Hey Scott, thanks for reaching out. So it is possible to add a second tier to your Malone MicroSport LowBed with the # MPG474 2nd Tier Kit. It bolts right on and gives you another set of 50-inch crossbars. This should only be used for lighter kayaks or gear though. It has a weight capacity of 100 lbs, and based on what I am seeing online, the Oldtown 120 Autopilots are over 100 lbs.

The trailer itself can handle up to 800 pounds, so three AutoPilot 120s aren’t a problem weight-wise—it’s just the upper rack that’s the limitation. If you're hauling boats of that size, they will need to stay on the lower level.

Thanks for the response. Much appreciated. I figured that would be the answer. I doubt I can add a third kayak to the bottom tier but maybe with some creative DIY. Can you suggest a trailer that could accommodate three heavy Oldtown autopilots?

@ScottK So how are you carrying the kayaks currently? Do you have them just laying flat on the crossbars? If so, one option might be to use a j-style carrier like part # e98878. This would allow the kayaks to be transported on their side, so it would save room on the crossbars and would probably be a lot easier to fit all 3. The # e98878 carrier has a 150 lb capacity so the weight of the kayaks will not be a problem. Or if you want to look at other trailers that can carry all 3, take a look at the following: - Yakima EasyRider Double Decker Trailer - 14-1/2' Long - 78" HD Crossbars - 500 lbs # Y08129 This is made for carrying four kayaks. It has a 500 lb total capacity, and the top tier can hold 350 lbs so this would be good option for carrying three Oldtown autopilots. Let me know if you have any questions, or if there is anything else you need!
