Does Removing Seats of Ford Transit Increase Towing Capacity

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 09/30/2025

Question:

I have a 2025 Transit 350 12 passenger XLT, mid roof, 3.5 turbo , AWD, Full tow package. According to Ford ,my tow rating is 4100 lbs. The cargo version of my van is rated for 2400 pounds MORE. I plan to remove ALL of my rear seats leaving only the front 2. And those seats are heavy. I would be of the opinion that I can tow a bit more ? 2 The factory receiver hitch has no decal or indication of the rating. I am aware of the general rule that the tongue weight is 10 of the loaded trailer weight. We were at a dealer today looking at a trailer. The rep said we can increase the tongue weight capability by increasing to a higher rated hitch receiver. I am of the opinion that my tongue rating is determined by the vehicle frame / chassis and suspension. I have looked at aftermarket receiver hitches specifically designed for the Transits and they have trailer ratings all of the ay up to 10,000 lbs. The hitch receivers you sell all well EXCEED the factory tow rating from Ford for our van. Thank You

Hey Andy, removing your seats does not allow us to guarantee you'd be able to tow more weight. Only a Ford dealer could give you the green light on that. With any towing setup you are only as strong as your weakest component so going with a higher rated hitch like the Curt # C13315 wouldn't give you any additional capacity beyond what the vehicle is rated for.

Hey Andy, were you able to confirm with Ford whether removing the rear seats changes your towing capacity on the Transit? Knowing what they said could help others wondering about similar setups. Your update could make it easier for the next person with the same question.
