Can I Install a Baseplate and a Front Hitch on a 2017 Chevrolet Colorado?

Updated 10/23/2025 | Published 09/26/2025

Question:

Hi. I have a 2017 chevy Colorado 4x4. I want to purchase the curt front 2 tow hitch and I want need to flat tow the vehicle. Will the etrailer invisible base plate kit fit with a front hitch installed? Do I need to install one before the other to make fit? Or will this combination not work? If you have other ideas that will work please advise. Thanks

Hey Josh. The combination of a front hitch and a baseplate is not going to work on your 2017 Chevrolet Colorado. That's going to be any brand too not just the Curt item # C31074 front hitch and the etrailer Invisible Base Plate Kit item # e98966. They occupy the same real-estate on the front end of your truck so you'll need to pick one or the other.

Here are the rest of the parts you'll need to flat tow your 2017 Chevrolet Colorado:

Tow Bar and Safety Chains - etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar - RV Mount - 2" Hitch - 6,000 lbs item # e34ZR

Wiring Harness - Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit item # RM-15267

Battery Disconnect - Roadmaster Battery Disconnect with Switch item # RM-766

Supplemental Braking System - SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System item # SM99251 or item # SM99243 if your motorhome has air brakes

High Low Adapter - The tow bar needs to be within 3" of level. If you measure the height of the inside top of the hitch receiver tube on your RV, and the height difference is more than 3 inches above/below the base plate tab height, you'll need a high/low adapter. I have linked a FAQ article that explains all this in more detail along with our selection of adapters.

What motorhome do you have?

Hey Josh, what setup did you end up going with for flat towing your Colorado? Your experience could point others in the right direction when deciding between a front hitch and a base plate. Knowing which option worked best would be a big help to others planning a similar tow setup.

@JerredH The invisible base plate kit. They connect in place of the standard front hooks on the truck. The front Curt hitch mounted underneath/lower on the frame rail.
