Need Heavy Duty Hitch Extension For 2011 Ram With In-Bed Camper

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 09/02/2025

Question:

So I have a bumper pull horse trailer, exiss brand for three horses. Max tongue weight is 900 ibs and Max tow weight is gonna be 6000 lbs. I want to buy a slide in truck camper, palomino brand, model 8801. Has a box length of 9 ft going into 2011 Ram truck with 8 ft bed. What is the shortest length extension I would need to clear this camper and will this extension support that weight?

Hello Mark, thanks for reaching out. The only extension that can hold that kind of weight are the Torklift SuperTruss hitch extensions like part # TLE1536. This is rated for up to 1,200 lbs of tongue weight. The only way to use this extension is by replacing your trailer hitch with a Torklift brand Super Hitch.

Is your Ram a 1500, 2500 or 3500? Also does it have a factory trailer hitch? Let me know and I can recommend the correct Torklift hitch for you. I do not have a way to tell you exactly how long of an extension you will need, but typically a 36" like the # TLE1536 I mentioned above would be enough. The only way to know for sure would be to hook everything up and take some measurements. The extensions are available up to 48" long.

Let me know what truck you have and I will recommend the hitch.

Hey Mark, did you have a chance to find out if your Ram is a 1500, 2500, or 3500, and if it has a factory trailer hitch? I'm eager to help you find the right Torklift hitch for your setup.
