Is the Travelbox camp heater loud when running at night?

Updated 09/03/2025 | Published 08/11/2025

Question:

We do a lot of dispersed camping and don't like the noise of generators. Is the Travelbox noisy like a generator? and my understanding is it doesn't need another power source?

Not at all, Rob. The Travelbox heater # AU36MR runs very quietly - it’s mostly just a soft hum and some faint ticking from the fuel pump which is very quiet. Definitely way quieter than a generator or even a propane furnace blower.

If you place it a few feet from your tent or trailer and route the duct inside, you’ll hardly notice it at all!

What are some of your favorite places to camp? And is this going in a roof top tent or ground tent?

How about fuel use ? will it sip a lot of diesel if I run it all night? That's one issue we had on our gas generator that powered our heat last year. thx!

@Karen Great question, Karen. The Travelbox is very fuel-efficient - on low mode it burns around 1/10th of a gallon per hour, so you can run it all night and only use about a gallon. That’s one reason overlanders love it compared to running a generator. Are you planning to pair it with a small jerry can, or just use your vehicle’s tank as the source?
