How to Carry 2 e-Bikes While Towing a Trailer with a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Updated 08/20/2025 | Published 08/08/2025

Question:

Have a 2021 Silverado Duramax crew cab short box. And I have 2E bikes that are heavy, so wondering which above the bed rack will work with these and what kind of attachments do I need to secure the bikes? I don’t want to take wheel off of the bikes.

Hey Jim, thanks for reaching out!

The Yakima BedRock HD Truck Bed Rack # Y01160-59 is a great start to carrying your e-Bikes, but you'll have to remove your tonneau cover in order to use it. If you choose to go that route then the Inno Tire Hold II # INA389 is a solid rack that can handle up to 50 lb bikes. Let me know what specific e-bikes you have and I can make sure this rack will work for you.

If you'd rather not take the tonneau cover off (totally understandable), then we'll need to explore some other options. Are you using a weight distribution hitch (WDH) for towing, and do you have a bumper on your trailer? We could also add a roof rack to your truck cab if you're okay going that route.

Just let me know! I'm here to help you figure this out!

I have 2 trek verve+3 i believe they are 55 pounds each . I don’t mind removing the cover just want something that’s going to work and leave me my storage space in the bed and keep the very expensive bike secure

@JimJ Thanks for letting me know! You have some pretty sweet bikes, but they also are unique enough that none of the roof style bike racks (required for an over-the-bed crossbar kit) will be able to secure the bikes or have enough weight capacity to hold them. The best setup would be for you to use the Lets Go Aero V-Lectric VFR Bike Rack # LGA25VR at the back of your trailer, but we'll need to make sure you have a frame-mounted hitch receiver on your trailer for this as well. It seems a little over the top but the only other option would be to use something like the Gen-Y Shank # 325-GH-304 and mount a bike rack between your truck and trailer. I'm confident we can get this figured out for you. What are you thinking about these options?
