Should Winch Be Hooked Up To Battery With Threaded Terminals Or Alligator Clips?

Updated 08/15/2025 | Published 07/21/2025

Question:

I am running a 2,000 pound electric winch off a deep cycle battery, the unit came with the connection that uses the threaded post ends, I changed the ends to a alligator clip end, and tested the winch, but the positive wire seems to get really hot, should I go back to using post threaded ends

Hey Ken, that doesn't sound good, but I think you're on the right track. Winches, such as the Bulldog Winch Utility Winch 2,000 lbs # BDW15008 or Superwinch LT2000 ATV Winch 2,000 lbs # 1120210, typically need to be installed onto the threaded terminal with nuts to keep it completely tight and free of much resistance.

The alligator style clips are probably what is causing your hot wire issue. This is typically an "okay" method for temporary use, but not good for long term as you're finding out.

What are you using the winch for? I have one on my car hauler and it's permanent so I have it fastened to the terminals with hardware.

Hey Ken, did you decide to switch back to the threaded post ends for your winch? I'm curious to know how it worked out for you, as it might help others facing a similar issue with their setup.
